Recovering a V-Series or P-Series controller from a failed firmware update
This article is for the V1-M, V1-X, P1-M, P1-X, and P1 Nano.
If one of these controller models is stuck in firmware upgrade mode, or the screen went blank after a failed firmware update, do not worry, this is usually recoverable, and the steps below will walk you through it.
It often happens after a power fluctuation, a dropped connection, or a USB hub in the line during the update, so it is not something you did wrong.
This recovery method is for the V-Series and P-Series only.
Please do not run the steps below on a QCon or Platform device, as you could damage the device
Before you start:
Update only one device at a time
Turn off and unplug any extenders, and update only one device at a time.
A main unit and its extender, for example a V1-M and a V1-X are separate devices with separate firmware.
In iMap, check the device dropdown and confirm it names the exact device you are updating.
This keeps the correct firmware on the correct device.
Recovery steps
- Connect the controller directly to a USB 3.0 port (the blue one) on the computer, not through a hub, and turn the power on. For a firmware update, always connect directly and never use a hub.
- Open the correct iMap for your model and click Firmware Upgrade.
- Before you click Start, click the empty grey area of the Firmware Upgrade window, then press the T key on your computer’s keyboard. A small dot appears next to "Firmware Upgrade" to confirm.
- Turn the unit's power off.
- Click Start, and immediately turn the unit back on within 2 seconds
- Wait for the update to finish. Please leave any pop-up windows open during the process
When the update finishes, close the iMap, then power cycle the controller
The controller should then be operating normally
If the controller will not respond: perform a factory reset
If the controller is completely unresponsive and the steps above will not start, you can try a factory reset.
The steps are the same on the V1-M, V1-X, P1-M, P1-X, and P1 Nano:
- Turn the unit off.
- Press and hold Encoders 2 and 3.
- While holding them, turn the unit back on.
A quick note about Factory Reset, so there are no surprises:
This is a factory user reset, so it clears the controller user’s settings, including custom mappings or button assignments you have set up.
You should save the iMap configuration before you do the factory reset, so you can then easily load the custom mappings and button assignments back into the iMap from the saved file.
On the P1-M, the screen may not show anything while it factory resets, but it is still working in the background, so give it a moment.
After the reset, reconnect the controller and run the recovery steps above.
If recovery does not work
If the controller is still not detected, or the screen stays blank, the internal firmware may need to be restored at a service center.
Contact support with the following details:
- Your exact controller model,
- Your operating system, and a note on what happened during the update,
We will point you to the nearest service option. You will not be stuck with an unusable unit.
Giving the next update the best chance
Firmware updates go smoothly the vast majority of the time. To keep it that way:
- Connect the controller directly to the computer, not through a USB hub.
- Update one device at a time, and disconnect any other iCON devices first.
- Keep the power and the connection steady, and let the update run without using the computer for anything else.
- Let the update finish on its own before disconnecting the device.
