FAQ: Restore the Correct Firmware on iCON Control Surfaces
On rare occasions, the wrong firmware may be installed on an iCON control surface. The most common example is installing main unit firmware on an extender or vice versa.
This can cause the device to respond incorrectly. In many cases, the device can be restored by reconnecting through iMAP and installing the correct firmware for the exact model.
Applies To
This guide applies to iCON main units and extenders in the following product families:
- V Series devices (V1-M, V1-X)
- P Series devices (P1-M, P1-X, P1 Nano)
- QCon devices (QCon Pro, QCon EX, QCon Pro X, QCon Pro XS, QCon Pro G2, QCon EX G2)
- Platform devices (Platform M+, Platform X+, Platform Nano)
Before You Begin
Please prepare the following:
- The correct iMAP software for your device
- The correct firmware file for your exact model
- A direct USB connection to your computer
- Only the device you want to correct powered on and connected
Important: Power off all other iCON controllers before starting. This helps iMAP connect to the correct unit and keeps the process clear.
Step 1: Restart Your Setup
First, restart the device and your computer.
After restarting:
- Open the correct iMAP software.
- Select the correct device profile for your physical device.
- Enter firmware upgrade mode.
- Install the correct firmware file.
In some cases, this will restore normal operation.
Step 2: Open iMAP Using the Firmware Profile Currently on the Device
If the device still does not respond as expected, open iMAP using the device profile that was installed by mistake.
For example:
- If an extender was updated with main unit firmware, the extender may appear as the main unit in iMAP.
- In this case, open iMAP in the main unit profile first.
- The physical device is still the extender, but the firmware currently inside the device may cause iMAP to identify it as the main unit.
This allows iMAP to recognize the device before you restore the correct firmware.
Step 3: Connect to the Device
With only the affected device powered on and connected:
- Click Connect in iMAP.
- Choose the device from the drop-down list.
- The device may appear under the name of the firmware that was installed by mistake.
- Select that device.
- Click OK if prompted.
- Close any extra connection windows, leaving the main iMAP window open.
Step 4: Switch iMAP to the Correct Device Profile
Once the device is connected:
- Switch iMAP to the correct profile for the physical device.
- For an extender, select the extender profile.
- Enter firmware upgrade mode again.
- Select the correct firmware file for that exact device.
- Start the firmware update.
- Wait until the process is complete.
Do not disconnect the USB cable or power off the device during the update.
Step 5: Restart and Test
After the firmware update is complete:
- Close iMAP.
- Power off the device.
- Restart your computer.
- Power the device back on.
- Open your DAW or control software.
- Confirm that the device now responds correctly.
