When using your device in a mobile setup using Lithium Ion batteries, power may fluctuate beyond the intended voltage for your device. The Platform M+ employs a voltage regulator chip making it safe for these conditions up to 16-17V input. 

However, it's important to note the polarity of the DC plug, as the inside is positive and outside is negative (as shown below).
